A little bit of history about our reindeer:

Were you aware that reindeer are not really from the North Pole? In fact, they originally come from Europe and Asia. However, some of them have managed to make their way over to North America too. The first reindeer in North America were brought over by the Icelandic settlers around 1,000 years ago and they landed in Canada. Reindeer have also been successfully introduced into Alaska, where there are now around 35,000 of them.

Reindeer and caribou are the same animal (Rangifer tarandus) and are a member of the deer family.

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are a member of the deer family, which also includes elk, moose, and caribou. Unlike their cousins the white-tailed deer and mule deer, both males and females grow antlers. Reindeer are the only deer in which this is true.

Antlers are used for fighting, for display, and for digging through the snow to find food. Reindeer have large, hoofed feet that act like snowshoes, allowing them to walk on top of the snow.

The woody part of the reindeer’s antlers is called “velvet” and is covered in tiny blood vessels. These vessels help to supply nutrients to the growing antler. Once the antlers are fully grown, the velvet dies and is shed.

Reindeer are herbivores and eat mostly grasses, mosses, and lichens. They have a thick coat of fur that helps keep them warm in the coldest climates. Reindeer are hunted for their meat and antlers.
